Heading to Paris for the last gig of this tour but being honest – with SM there is no “last gig” as such. It just means the last gig before a break that inevitably leads to the next move forward and onwards into the future. Changes are always happening though and that will be apparent when we walk on stage in Paris.

Nothing in this world is permanent after all, and change as unavoidable as it often is, can be painful too. We call those kind of changes growing pains and Charlie and I have endured so many of them as we have endeavoured to make sure that nothing stops or get in the way of whatever it is that continues to make Simple Minds special to so many. It is part of what we do, and a huge part at that!

Anyway, apart from the dynamics of change, in a good way only I sense that almost nothing is certain in the world of Simple Minds these days – and that is for sure!!! It keeps us all o our toes, makes it very exciting on a weekly basis almost.

An example of that is how only a few weeks ago I was saying how the festival gig in Paris on September 11 would be a fitting way for Simple Minds to step back from playing live for the foreseeable future, and that a break from playing live would be healthy etc.
But three weeks is seemingly a long time in the world of the Minds and here I am now not so certain that Paris will in fact see us head towards some longstanding hiatus.

I can’t tell you that some singular event has happened to change the previous outlook but it definitely now seems less likely to me that we will in fact do a disappearing act from playing live, least so for any major period. So what has gone on to so quickly alter my view?

It’s all to do with the emerging pleasant surprise that as a tour comes to an end we find ourselves far from jaded or exhausted.
The recent Brazil tour and subsequent European dates hopefully more than proved that the band seemed to have somehow accumulated more energy as the tour has progressed, and even within “the last furlong or the home straight” we seemed to have found a “new engine” that demands to be utilized rather – than being mothballed.

So why not keep on improving! Why not keep getting in front of as many audiences as possible? Why not try to keep as many tuned in to all these moves forward that we continue to make? And lastly, why not offer some good news to those who relish seeing us play our hearts out  constantly?
