Simple Minds: grovelling apology

In my article about reunions today, I erroneously suggested that Simple Minds had broken up and reformed. In fact, they have kept going in one form or another for 32 years, through highs and lows.

They disappeared off my personal radar for a while and entered into a rather fractious relationship with the now moribund Sanctuary group, but that’s not the same as breaking up. Their forthcoming album, ‘Graffiti Soul’, is certainly as good as anything in their classic back catalogue. And it will actually be their fourth release this decade. I have been listening to it on my iPod and thinking about the resurgence of Eighties arena bands (U2, The Cure, Depeche Mode and Simply Minds) which may have been why I mistakenly included them amongst the revivalists.

I just received a perfectly pleasant email rebuke from Jim Kerr pointing out my mistake. After three decades of service, he was understandably somewhat hurt to be included amongst the “quitters, reformers and uh, mortgage wallahs.”

So apologies. Simple Minds are back! But they never went away!
